For a child entering foster care, almost everything changes at once: the home, the routines, the adults, sometimes even the school. In the middle of all that change, siblings are often each other’s closest companions.
At One Family Illinois, keeping siblings together is central to our mission and distinguishes us from other foster care providers. Here’s why we believe it matters so much:
Emotional Stability
Being placed in a new home can feel overwhelming. The house is unfamiliar, the people are strangers at first, and the rules are unknown. For many children, that brings intense anxiety and fear.
Having a brother or sister nearby changes the experience. Familiar faces provide comfort and ease the fear of stepping into a new environment. A child who might otherwise face those first nights alone has someone who knows them, someone who is by their side.
A Sense of Identity
Siblings share more than just a last name They share family traditions, inside jocks, and personal history.
These shared experiences anchor a child’s sense of self. When siblings stay together, a child does not have to wonder whether their past was real or not or who remembers it. There is someone who was part of the same story and can help carry it forward.
A Foundation of Healing
Children in foster care are often coping with loss, disruption, and uncertainty. Healing is possible and siblings can be a big partof it.
Siblings help provide a foundation for healing by lowering stress, validating shared memories and preserving a sense of permeant belonging amid challenging life changes. When so much feels out of a child’s control, having a brother or sister who stays constant makes a powerful difference.
A Bond that Lasts into Adulthood
The longest relationship a person will have in their lifetime is with their siblings.
Keeping siblings together in foster care preserves this relationship for the future. When we protect this bond early on, we help children have a lifelong connection: someone who knows where they came from and where they are going.
That belief guides everything we do at One Family Illinois. Siblings are family, and they shouldn’t lose each other on top of everything else a child in foster care is going through.
