A Mom by Any Name Means Love

A mother’s love is one of life’s greatest gifts. This well-known sentiment rings especially true when we reflect on how deeply meaningful it is to have moms and mother figures in our lives.

For many, “mom” is the woman who gave them life. While countless biological mothers freely give the gift of unconditional love, they are not the only ones who embody what it means to be a mom. Adoptive moms, foster moms, stepmoms, single moms, and devoted maternal figures all offer the same powerful presence. And we cannot overlook grandmothers and great-grandmothers, whose love often spans generations.

Foster Moms Gift Love Beyond Time Together

At OneFamily Illinois, foster moms play a vital role in advancing our mission toensure the safety and well-being of children in foster care. Foster moms are also partners and advocates for biological moms and dads, along with our childwelfare specialists, to help parents achieve the goal of bringing theirchildren home.

While loving and caring for a child in foster care and then having to say goodbye can be emotionally difficult, our foster moms say that it is truly heartwarming to seefamilies reunited.

“The most rewarding part of the job is when children get to go home,” says One Family Illinois foster mom Miss Mickey Haldeman, who witnessed countless family reunions during her more than 30 years as a foster mom at Lockport Village. “It’s hard to let the kids go, but it’s easier when you know that they are going to be happy and loved.”

The time that foster moms spend with children may be temporary, but they give their whole hearts to those in their care. They take on all the traditional roles of motherhood—carpooling, supporting after-school activities, and preparing meals—while also guiding children through some of the most emotional and uncertain times of their lives.

For many, the bond between foster moms and the children they care for extends far beyond childhood, lasting well into adulthood—a testament to the enduring power of love.

“The biggest reward is when the children come back to visit,” says One Family Illinois’ Roosevelt Square Village foster mom Miss. Gabby, who remains connected with the young people she once cared for—many now in college, and some grown with families of their own.
Celebrating Every Kind of Mom

Although moms come in many forms, every one of them deserves to be celebrated. Each day, whether a birth, foster, step, adoptive, or grand mom, the maternal figures inour lives show up with love, strength, and wisdom, shaping us in ways both bigand small.

Theyexpress their love in countless ways:

  • Keeping us safe and protecting us from infancy through adulthood
  • Putting their children’s needs before their own
  • Loving us, even when we struggle to love ourselves
  • Listening when we need to be heard
  • Offering tough love when it matters most
  • Lifting us up when life feels overwhelming
  • Cheering us on, rain or shine
  • Believing in us and celebrating our successes
  • Loving us, always and unconditionally
