Every child deserves to walk into school on the first day feeling confident, prepared, and ready to learn. Unfortunately, for many children in foster care, that is not always the case.  

Backpacks, school supplies, shoes, and clothing are expensive and can place a significant financial burden on families.  This year parents are expected to spend an average of nearly $600 per child on back-to-school essentials.

At One Family Illinois, approximately 250 children in foster care are getting ready to return to school. Many of these young people are navigating major life changes, including new homes, new caregivers, and often new schools. During times of uncertainty, having the basic items they need can make a world of difference.  

Something as simple as a new backpack, clothes that fit, or a comfortable pair of shoes can help a child feel accepted, confident, and ready to learn.
